Laura Stack was best known in the business world for her professional moniker, The Productivity Pro. Her 30-year career as a keynote speaker, bestselling author of eight productivity books, and corporate spokesperson came to a screeching halt on November 20, 2019, when her 19-year-old son, Johnny, died by suicide after becoming psychotic from dabbing high-THC marijuana concentrates. Laura responded by forming the nonprofit, Johnny’s Ambassadors, to educate parents and teens about the dangers of today’s high-THC marijuana on adolescent brain development, mental illness, and suicide. Her platform now brings education, awareness, and prevention curriculum to schools, parents, prevention conferences, and coalitions to prevent youth THC use.
Dr. Christian Thurstone is one of few physicians in the United States who are board certified in general, child and adolescent and addictions psychiatry. He is the medical director of STEP at Denver Health and an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado Denver. Dr. Thurstone is also the director of the University of Colorado's addiction psychiatry fellowship program, at the University of Colorado. Dr. Thurstone has completed medical training at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and the University of Colorado. In 2010, he completed five years of mentored research training through the National Institute on Drug Abuse/American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry K12 Research Program in Substance Abuse. Dr. Thurstone also currently serves as a team physician serving the National Football League and is a past president of the Colorado Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Society. In June 2012, the United States Congress awarded him another title: U.S. Army Major. He is honored to treat American service members who need mental healthcare as an Army Reserves officer.
Ruth Ross is engaged in research into the molecular pharmacology of the cannabinoids and related lipid signaling systems. Her research is directed both toward gaining insight into the deleterious effects of cannabis smoking, the potential for cannabis a medicine and the development of small molecules targeting G protein coupled receptors. Together with medicinal chemists she is engaged in the development of novel small molecule therapeutics for major diseases including chronic pain, addiction, cancer and diabetes.
Cannabis Cessation Strategies and Withdrawal Management
Nikhil Rao MD MSc is a triple board certified pediatric psychiatrist at Kartini Clinic, with extensive experience across multiple settings including eating disorders, neuro-developmental disorders (such as autism), and the interface between medical and psychiatric illness. Dr. Rao is a member of Oregon Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. After completing his fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry in 2017, Dr. Rao went on to achieve board certification in general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and also obesity medicine. Dr. Rao’s clinical interests lie in untangling complex diagnosis and treatment challenges in individuals with multiple mental and physical health issues, and identifying the right mix of psychotherapy and medication approaches to best serve the individual. He is fond of teaching and has written or lectured at audiences of all educational levels at the local, regional, and national level. Dr. Rao currently works in several settings including with at-risk youth, inpatient psychiatry, and works with Kartini Clinic’s team part-time to provide psychiatric consultation and evaluation.
Debbie Berndt is the Director of Substance Free Athletics and is on the board of many national prevention organizations as well as a local coalition all with the mission to reduce substance use among youth. She also heads Parent Movement 2.0 and was recently invited by SAMHSA to participate on a Technical Expert Panel creating a National Guide for Marijuana Youth Prevention, and as a parent, is trying to raise drug-free kids. Debbie has spoken to over ten thousand parents and teens since early 2017, when she realized parents, on the front-line of youth drug use, understood very little about today’s marijuana, other substances, and almost nothing about adolescent brain development. She found the same to be true for teens.
FINALIZING
Keith Hayes is the Director of Recovery at 5280 High School, a public school in Denver Public Schools that specializes in project based learning and comprehensive wellness. 5280 also has a thriving program for students in recovery from addiction. 5280 High School is creating bold, balanced students all of whom are dedicated to living life in recovery
We live in a world that is increasingly addictive, risky, and complex for adolescents in our lives. I have over 20 years of experience working with diverse youth and families, providing empowering information, tools, and support to parents, schools, and community organizations on guiding the kids we care about healthily and resiliently into young adulthood. All while keeping our relationships with them strong, and our own sanity intact! I bring my expertise and engaging facilitation style to a variety of settings and services, weaving humor, empathy, and a social justice lens into all that I do.
Dr. Stuyt is a board-certified Addiction Psychiatrist and has worked in the addiction/behavioral health field since 1990. She was the Medical Director for the Circle Program, a 90-day inpatient treatment program, funded by the state of Colorado, for persons with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse who have failed other levels of treatment since 1999. She retired from this position in 2020 and is currently motivated to educate as many people as possible on the un-intended consequences seen from the commercialization of marijuana in Colorado, focusing primarily on the deleterious effects of high potency THC on the developing brain and mental health.
Community Engagement Specialist
Melissa Moore has worked in Public Health for over 20 years, leading substance abuse prevention and coalition efforts in multiple diverse communities. Emphasizing the need to go beyond education to address the factors that contribute to substance abuse, Ms. Moore has helped lead assessment, planning, implementation and grant writing efforts to transform the way communities tackle this daunting burden. An expert in engagement and communication, Ms. Moore is always looking for opportunities to take great ideas and move them into tangible actions answering the age-old question...We recognize this is an issue, now what can we do about it?
Grace Davis, a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, credits Johnny as a pivotal influence in her decision to complete her degree and quit cannabis. She recognizes that her cannabis/THC use contributed to the progression of her bipolar disorder, which can present with symptoms overlapping psychosis and other mental health conditions.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, students with bipolar disorder are 70% more likely to drop out of college than peers without psychiatric diagnoses. Despite these challenges, Davis earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology while completing both the Interdisciplinary and Upper-Division honors programs. She is an award-winning student and undergraduate researcher.
A former advocate and teacher in Douglas County schools, Davis recognizes the importance of drug-free initiatives and accessible mental health resources for youth. She is passionate about reducing mental health stigma and fostering resilience through education, advocacy, and open dialogue. In addition to speaking, Grace co-facilitates the TOGETHER: Preventing and Recovering from CIP program for Johnny’s Ambassadors.
Davis and Johnny first met as children at Camp Id-Ra-Ha-Je (“I’d Rather Have Jesus”) in Bailey, Colorado. In the spring of 2019, they reconnected while living on the same dorm floor at the University of Northern Colorado. When Johnny confided in her about his mental health struggles, including psychosis and suicidality, she repeatedly advocated for and supported him. Her reports requesting mental health interventions for Johnny were not ethically addressed by those who received them.
“Laura, I am so glad I attended the conference – as a mother and a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. I am trying to spread the word about the toxic and dangerous impact of THC on kids one family at a time. This conference armed me with more facts, stories, and data to help this cause. It is disturbing how uninformed the public and parents are. I only wish the schools would allow and support much, much more education. The school districts and social media public service announcements for kids are the main ways to get the information out. I would be happy to help with any campaigns or in any other way that I can. All parents, educators, and politicians should be attending your conferences yearly and participating much more in the making necessary and critical changes in this area. Thank you for all you do. Your loss is with me every time I participate in anything we do to move the dial forward on destroying the THC industry’s power and hold on our kids.” - Lisa Hall, Counselor, L.M.F.T.
“Laura, Michele and I really appreciated and enjoyed attending the conference. You and your husband did an amazing job coordinating every detail and the conference was beyond our expectations. The venue was beautiful, the food was great, and the speakers were exceptional. As a 40 year career law enforcement professional, the information exchange was incredible. Thank you again for your dedication and conviction to helping others. We look forward to the conference next year.” - Dan Zsido, Seminole, Florida
“I’m sure your email is flooded with nothing but praises. The conference was absolutely fantastic. Next year I want to attend the 2 day in person. All the presentations were great. I felt like I was drinking from a firehose at times. I like how you broke it down by speaker and focus. The data and studies cited were really helpful. The Marijuana Conference was jam packed with the most current, all encompassing information on youth and THC. When I want the most up to date, impactful information or data, I go to Johnny’s Ambassadors website, or scan the FB posts. Laura Stack is passionate about protecting our kids from the dangers of THC. The best in the field respect her and know she gets the message out. They were all at the conference and delivered a punch to motivate us to join the offensive taking back our youth’s wellness.” - Nancy Henderson, Project Coordinator, Prevention Council of Roanoke
“Where do I even start... Amazing!! From start to finish, I was all in!! You have taken your unimaginable loss and turned it into something so meaningful to so many people! I am brand new to my local coalition to help prevent substance abuse in our youth, and this was such a great conference for my first experience! The information you all presented was very meaningful, real world experiences and such great knowledge by all of your presenters. I was part of the live stream, and it was flawless. I cannot wait to take back all I learned to the coalition that I am a part of. I appreciate you making the recording available to us, some of the information I would like to hear again. I loved the fact that your presenters didn’t present just the statistics but also gave some really helpful information on how to connect with the kids, and to help get the information to the kids so they may actually listen to the message. This is beyond important information, you have a great team surrounding you to help deliver the message. Keep up the great work that you all are doing and I look forward to seeing you all again next year!! Thank you. - Brenda Ready RN, Med/Surg Charge Nurse, Genesis Medical Center
“The conference was incredible Laura. I was very impressed by the breadth of what was covered and the quality of the speakers. I will be able to use a lot of what I learned in my coalition work here in New Jersey. Thank you for organizing this conference!” - Michael Regenelli, SCRATCH Project Coordinator, The Southwest Council, Inc.
