Women Swimmin' for Hospicare

About Our Organization

Hospicare & Palliative Care Services serves residents of Tompkins and Cortland counties.

  • Our palliative care program provides specialized medical care that focuses on relieving symptoms and stress at any stage of a serious illness. The goal of palliative care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. Palliative care is provided by a specially trained team of doctors, nurses, and other specialists who work together with a patient’s other doctors to provide an extra layer of support.

  • Our hospice team makes people comfortable in the last six months of their lives by honoring the patient’s wishes and by providing far more than medical care. We take into consideration patients' medical, emotional, and spiritual needs so they can more fully enjoy time with loved ones. We provide these services in homes, in acute and chronic care facilities, and at our six-bed residence.
  • We also support families of our late patients with 13 months of bereavement services.

  • Finally, as a part of our commitment to the community, we provide bereavement support services to anyone in our service area who is grieving the death of a loved one, whether or not they died on hospice.

83% of Hospicare’s services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurances. Our generous community helps bridge the gap, ensuring exceptional care to every patient and family who needs us. Go the Distance and Women Swimmin’ for Hospicare are essential parts of our work to raise nearly $1 million from private sources each year.

Funds raised through Women Swimmin' and Go the Distance for Hospicare make the following possible:

...the Gift of Comfort
Contributions support caregivers in understanding how to make their home accessible; provide pillow wedges to patients to reduce the chance of bedsores; and support individuals at any stage of a serious illness through palliative care.

...the Gift of Support
Donations help a child participate in a workshop to create a clay memory box; support a patient who wishes to talk about advanced planning; and provide training to staff and volunteers to stay current on best practices in patient care.

...the Gift of Tranquility
Philanthropy brings therapeutic music to a patient; purchases seed so patients can watch the birds that visit the Hospicare residence; and help maintain the perennial gardens that provide beauty and solace for all who visit.

...the Gift of Peace
Contributions help Hospicare in its work to provide emotional support to patients who are struggling with complicated family dynamics; help a grieving spouse find a path forward; and provide counseling to a community group after a suicide.

Hospicare uses an interdisciplinary team approach to providing holistic care to patients, families and caregivers in Tompkins and Cortland counties. We offer emotional, medical and spiritual support, and patients have access to care from physicians, nurses, social workers, grief counselors, home health aides and volunteers.
