I am running the 2023 NYC Marathon to raise money and awareness for colon cancer research and prevention.
Our story:
In 2015, our world was turned upside down when my wife, Becca, was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer just weeks after giving birth to our 2nd child. In fact, our 7 week old daughter was with us at the appointment when we got the official diagnosis. At just 32 years old (at the time), it was the last thing we expected to have to deal with as a young family, but the fight quickly became a reality. To this day, I still remember Becca's doctor telling her at that first appointment that "you will see your (then 2 year old) son graduate kindergarten." Well, she has blown by that prediction... our son is about to finish 4th grade and our daughter 2nd!
The past 8 years have been filled with many emotions, and countless medical ups and downs. In February 2023, we were able to celebrate a milestone that seemed hard to imagine back in 2015... Becca's 40th birthday. And we did so with the best gift of all -- a new clean bill of health!
As a family, we have seen first hand how devastating a colon cancer diagnosis can be, but we also realize how blessed we have been through it all. The unfortunate truth is that more young people--others just like Becca--are being diagnosed at a higher rate and with more advanced colon cancer in recent years. We long for the time when this disease is no longer the threat that it is today.
While we can never be certain what the future will hold, we are thankful for all the organizations like Colon Cancer Foundation that work to raise awareness for early detection, fund research for treatment options, and support for those living with colon cancer. To be where she is today--an 8 year survivor of stage IV colon cancer--is nothing short of a miracle; something made possible in large part due to the work of organizations like CCF. For this reason, I am honored to be running with--and raising money for--CCF in the NYC Marathon this November.
I has truly taken a village. Many thanks for your support!
