EVENT DETAILS: 

Athlete Leadership University (ALU) is a 2-day learning experience, through a series of classroom sessions and hands-on activities, designed for Special Olympics Colorado (SOCO) athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities. ALU creates opportunities for SOCO athletes to develop and demonstrate leadership skills, use their voices and abilities to take on meaningful leadership roles on and off the field, to influence change in Special Olympics programs, and to help create inclusive communities. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Volunteers will work alongside athletes (14+) with intellectual and developmental disabilities to support them with achieving their leadership goals. Volunteers will be assigned to an individual athlete or a small group of athletes, depending on class size, to support their participation and engagement during classroom time and group activities. Volunteers will accompany the athlete(s) throughout the weekend event and bring energy, enthusiasm, and encouragement. ALU Volunteers will attend both days of the event (September 19 and 20) – we ask volunteers to attend both days of the event to provide continuity and opportunities to build rapport with athletes.

Day 1 – Saturday, September 19, 2026 

Day 2 – Sunday, September 20, 2026 

WHAT TO WEAR: Each volunteer will receive a volunteer t-shirt to wear at the event. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
