As the Executive Director of the Alice Austen House which serves over 4,000 school students and 20,000 visitors per year, I am passionate about all of our fascinating museum collections for education and furthering the research into the life and work of Alice Austen. We own a beautiful 1st edition of the 1896 book, "Bicycling for Ladies" written by Austen's brilliant close friend and inventor Maria Ward, affectionately called Violet by her friends. Austen took the photographs that inspired the illustrations, and her model and girlfriend at the time was Daisy Elliot. Daisy, Violet and Alice were trailblazers leading the way for a more liberated life for women in the Victorian era, and I was thrilled to write the forward to the newest edition published this year! Bringing to light these histories inspires our students and helps spotlight Austen's too little known importance in documenting women's, LGBTQ+ and immigrant history in New York and beyond. You can be part of this by supporting the ongoing creation of programs and preservation at our museum! Join me in supporting the Alice Austen House. I thank you for your donation and invite you to accept the gift of membership with your donation at the $25 level and above!
