The Adventuress Cup - A Race for the Salish Sea

About The Adventures Cup - A Race for the Salish Sea

On Saturday, September 18, 2021, sailboats, motorboats and an enthusiastic ever-growing community will come together in Puget Sound to support the mission of Sound Experience. The nonprofit organization, celebrating 32 years, owns and operates the schooner Adventuress for our region's youth and our environment. This year marks the second exciting, inclusive on-the-water and virtual race that highlights the extraordinary Salish Sea marine environment and to raise funds to support the work of the iconic, fully-restored schooner Adventuress. More than 30,000 children and teens have climbed aboard Adventuress for powerful day and overnight programming over three decades. Together, young people raise the sails, take the helm and learn how our daily actions make a difference in the health of our waterways and oceans. As important, they experience what it means to be a shipmate.

Is this a REAL race/regatta?

Yes! This is a one-day “around the bouys” racing event which will include multiple starts that split the fleet into similar sized groups. The race will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. Race scoring will be comprised of:

1) On-the-water Race Results

2) Wind in Your Sails Challenge Points

3) Fundraising (1 dollar = 1 point)

4) Social Media and Recruiting Points

Why is this a fundraiser?

That’s a good question. The truth is, we need you. In times of pre-Covid, Sound Experience’s annual fall gala raised a quarter of the annual cost to deliver shipboard programs to more than a thousand children and teens each year. Such an event is, of course, not possible this year. Boats that are racing are asked to make a “good faith pledge” of $1,500 (or more) in tax-deductible financial support which can be donated outright or raised through an online peer-to-peer platform (similar to walk-a-thons). Sound Experience development staff members can help you set up your fundraising page so that your crew, friends, family and colleagues can donate. It’s easy!

Who is Sound Experience?

Sound Experience is a Washington-based nonprofit education organization that delivers powerful shipboard – and virtual – programs that shape young people’s perspectives about the marine environment. Over the past 30-plus years, more than 30,000 Puget Sound area children and teens have climbed aboard the 133-foot Adventuress for day and overnight programs. Programs teach environmental stewardship and current issues affecting Puget Sound and the Salish Sea, and introduce young people to potential marine-science and maritime-related career paths. Adventuress, which was built in 1913, carries the highest designation of historic significance as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) and is one of only two NHL sailing ships still in active operation on the West Coast.
