I received my diagnosis on January 12, 2018. I had my annual mammogram, which found some calcifications. I followed up with a biopsy and was diagnosed with DCIS. My mom had DCIS years ago, and she did great! I could do this.
My husband Ray, myself, and our two daughters, Shalen and Zoe, had moved across the country just five months before my diagnosis. All our family and friends live on the east coast. But I’m a tough Jersey Girl, so I made my appointment and started my journey.
The plan was “easy.” I had chosen surgery with immediate reconstruction. I should have been all done after that. Surprise, that’s not always the way things work. Cancer was found in my lymph nodes. My “easy plan” had just become a little more difficult. I now had to have chemotherapy and radiation.
I have always had a positive outlook and a good sense of humor. I tell my husband I should have been a comedian! It has helped me get through much of this journey. I’ve learned to laugh every day, even if it was just at myself! I am also thankful to have found Michelle’s Place Cancer Resource Center. I have met so many wonderful new friends that I cherish. I am not on this journey alone.
