Believe…

in Love, Prayers, and Family Support

Maria Alcaraz

My name is Maria Alcaraz, and I am 61 years old. I have lived in Kern County for the past nine years. In March 2021, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. After years of treatment, I received devastating news during a follow-up appointment in 2025: the cancer had spread to my left lung. Complications from my cancer also required surgery that left me needing a colostomy bag.

Before my diagnosis, I worked seasonally at Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream and loved every minute of it. I also worked in the agricultural fields during the off-season. I also enjoyed reading and cooking, activities that brought me pure joy.

Although chemotherapy has affected my sense of taste and changed many aspects of my daily life, I continue to face each day with faith, strength, and determination. The love and support of my three children, family, and friends have helped me through the most difficult moments. Most importantly, prayer has given me comfort and hope.

My journey has taught me the power of resilience and gratitude. Through every challenge, I continue to believe in love, prayer, and family support.
