Share what inspired this tribute: Penguins with a Purpose began in 2013 as a heartfelt project by nine-year-old Carter, who spent nearly three years collecting pine cones, acorns, rocks, and seashells during bike rides, walks, and family travels to craft unique penguin sculptures. After completing about 75 penguins, Carter asked a meaningful question: What is their purpose? Carter grew up understanding the impact of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) firsthand after his papa Jim sustained a severe brain injury in 1996. While attending the grand opening of Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in January 2011, Carter realized that children also face the devastating reality of TBI. That moment gave his artwork its true calling: the penguins would be sold to support pediatric TBI patients and their families. Jim received exceptional care along Grand Rapids' Medical Mile, and this project became our family’s way of giving back and paying forward our gratitude for the medical teams and advancements that supported him. Carter’s work quickly gained recognition across the community. In July 2013 they were displayed at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. In September 2013 he was one of the top 10 winners in ArtPrize’s inaugural ArtStart program. On August 11, 2026, Carter’s beloved Papa passed away. To honor Jim's memory and continue this meaningful legacy, we invite contributions to support this cause. While Carter will no longer be creating new penguins alongside his Papa, a limited supply of these original handmade pieces remains available.
