Why We Fundraise

Canine Companions transforms the lives of people with disabilities by providing expertly trained service dogs. Our dogs perform practical tasks that enhance independence and reduce reliance on others. They aren't just the eyes and ears, hands and legs of their human partners, they're also goodwill ambassadors and often, our best friends. A student achieves their dreams of attending college. A veteran gets a good night sleep. A patient can endure an additional procedure. Lives are transformed after being matched and working with a Canine Companions service dog.

According to the U.S. Census, nearly 1 in 4 people in the U.S. have a disability. While it costs approximately $50,000 to raise and train every Canine Companions service dog and provide ongoing support to the human-canine team, each dog is provided to the recipient completely FREE of charge. Canine Companions has placed over 7,000 service dogs, but more than 400 people with disabilities are still waiting for a match.

Our service dogs open up new opportunities and spread incredible joy. By raising funds through DogFest, you support our mission and the people we serve. Thank you.

Meet Team Kirk and Governor

For over 70 years, the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation has created a unique hospital environment where treatment, technology, hope, and healing unite to support each patient on their road to recovery. Sometimes, the most advanced technology capable of transforming lives has a cold nose and a warm heart. No one knows this better than Kessler physical therapist Kirk and his Canine Companions facility dog Governor. Kirk works with patients recovering from strokes and brain injuries at Kessler's inpatient rehabilitation facility in Saddle Brook, New Jersey.

Since joining the team at Kessler, Governor has been a calm and comforting presence to have in the therapy gym. Governor is often used to encourage clients to work on their balance while grooming him at a table, or through a game of "fetch." Clients who are working on their walking skills can take Governor for walks around the facility, or play his favorite game of hide and seek with his toy duck. Governor has also been useful in helping clients work on their vocal and memory skills through the use of various commands such as "sit," "shake," "speak," and his most recent favorite, "high five."

Kirk says, "Governor's calm and regal demeanor has been a welcome addition to the rehabilitation team here at Kessler. He brings many a smile to the faces of clients and staff alike."

Your support of DogFest Tri-States helps the continual placement of teams just like Kirk and Governor.
