San Diego's Ronald McDonald House and COVID-19

For forty years, families with hospitalized children have found a "home away from home" at San Diego's Ronald McDonald House. Our 56-room House and Family Care Center typically houses 1,000 families a year and offers day services to an additional 12,000 people. Throughout COVID-19, we've continued to serve as a critical safety net of care for the most seriously ill children and their families.

The House continues to serve families in the following ways:

  • Families who have children with life-threatening medical conditions that can't wait for COVID-19 to abate continue to find a room and comfort at the House;
  • Siblings of these families are participating in online activities to keep them entertained;
  • Over 200 families are coming across the street each day to pick up packaged to-go meals  and personal supply bags.

Dinner with Friends

In June of 2009, Carlos was diagnosed with cancer. He has since made a full recovery, but this life experience caused both Carlos and Matt to reevaluate their contributions to the community. They both shared the same vision of helping others in need. Carlos had heard good things about RMHC and in September of 2009 they organized their first volunteer event on behalf of the organization - serving dinner to the deserving families at RMHC. That evolved into an evening event to raise money to keep families close to their hospitalized child.

In previous years, guests would come together to enjoy an evening of dinner, entertainment, raffle and live and silent auctions. This year, due to COVID-19, they could not hold an in-person event and took their fundraising efforts online.

Please give, if possible, and plan to meet up again next year!

    "It's so hard to keep strong through the unknowns. The Ronald McDonald House was our lifesaver in those darkest days when we didn't know where else to turn. My husband is in the Marine Corps, and we're far from our family and friends back home. Every day here, staff and volunteers welcome us like family. They check on us and ask how our babies are doing. Welcoming us with a smile...that tells us we're not alone."  Family Member
