Who We Are
ETM’s model involves long-term collaborative partnerships with schools and principals to implement school-wide music education that supports cognitive and emotional development, while also helping school communities build the capacity to sustain programming.
ETM’s approach stands out both for inclusivity in increasing access to music education, and for involving whole school communities to encourage school-wide reform. In the ETM model, music is taught both in its own right, following a skills- and standards-based curriculum, and as a means of supporting learning in other areas at each grade level. The model emphasizes multiple points of connection and engagement with school stakeholders, including extensive training and support to teachers and school leadership, and outreach to parents.
ETM is a National Award-Winning Model
In 2005, the U.S. Department of Education recognized ETM as a model arts education program, investing in a multi-year external evaluation and program development. In 2006, ETM's first national affiliate outside of New York City was launched in Los Angeles (ETM-LA) and subsequently honored in 2008 at Los Angeles City Hall for its work positively impacting local communities through music education. In 2019, four ETM-LA partner schools were designated as California Exemplary Schools for the Arts. ETM's newest affiliates were founded in Denver, Colorado (ETM-Colorado) in 2018 and Boston, Massachusetts (ETM-Massachusetts) in 2020.
In 2012, the National Association for Music Education invited ETM to join the Music Education Policy Roundtable. More recently, ETM was invited to share our model at a 2017 international seminar in Santiago, Chile, and a 2018 symposium at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
With your support, we are able to bring life-changing music programs into the public school system. With over 30 years of experience, we have grown from one school in the South Bronx, New York, to strong partnerships in the following school systems: New York City, Los Angeles, Denver, and Boston.
