Since 2003, the University of Alberta Engineering Students’ Society has raised more than $405,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation with our annual Engineering Head Shave event. This year, we hope to raise an additional $10,000 to change the lives of Albertans and their families facing cancer.

Registration Information

**PLEASE READ BEFORE REGISTERING**

  • To create your fundraising page, click “Register” in the top right-hand corner. You can fundraise as an individual or as a part of a team.

  • If you want your fundraising to count for GEER Week Points, you must join your discipline’s team. If your discipline hasn’t created a team yet, you can create one and other people from your discipline can join it when they register.

  • Online donations can be made through this website and in-person donations will also be accepted on the day of the event.

  • HOW GEER WEEK POINTS ARE EARNED:

    • Every discipline team that collectively raises at least $100 will be awarded 40 points.

    • The discipline team with the highest total funds raised will be awarded an additional 40 points.

    • Please note that Head Shave CANNOT be used as the platform for Charitable Donations during GEER Week, as it would be considered double dipping into points.

  • A $50 Amazon gift card will be awarded to the individual with the highest funds raised (independent of their team).

  • The cutoff for determining GEER Week points and the highest individual fundraiser is Friday, January 12th at 4:00 pm.

  • You DO NOT HAVE TO SHAVE YOUR HEAD to have a fundraising campaign. Some alternatives that have been used in the past include cutting your hair, dyeing your hair, or gifting your art to your donors. If you have a new idea, please email essunity@ualberta.ca to confirm with us before you proceed.

  • At the event on January 12th, Hair Inc. Academy will only be cutting and shaving hair. If you plan to dye your hair, you must do it on your own time.

  • If you wish to donate your hair, you must make those arrangements. We can remove the hair from your head, but after that it is up to you.

Thank you for choosing to be a part of this event, your contribution is greatly appreciated. Happy fundraising!!!

History

The University of Alberta Engineering Head Shave dates back to 2003 when Ron Wicentowich, father of Gary and Graeme Wicentowich (Electrical Engineering 2006, Mechanical Engineering 2008) was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on February 11, 2004.

Louis Bezuidenhout, a past Engineering Students’ Society (ESS) executive and friend of the Wicentowich family, organized Razored for Ron, a charity head shave. On November 1, 2003, Razored for Ron raised over $12,500 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation and featured 36 participants. This included the three-year-old cousin of the Wicentowich brothers, who was the youngest person ever to participate in an Alberta Cancer Foundation sponsored head shave. A large number of engineering students, including the ESS executive, were involved in the event.

In 2004, the first Engineering Head Shave, as we now know it, was organized. Much of the organization of the event was based on Razored for Ron. Overall, the 1st Annual Engineering Head Shave and Engineering Hair Dye raised $13,064 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, far surpassing their original goal of $5,000.

The Engineering Head Shave has become an annual event proudly put on by the Engineering Students’ Society at the University of Alberta.

To date, the Engineering Head Shave has raised over $405,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation to invest in a better future for patients and their families at the Cross Cancer Institute.
