Over the past 30+ years as a congenital heart surgeon, I’ve had the privilege of caring for thousands of patients of all ages with congenital heart defects. It has truly been the honor of my life. Since moving to West Michigan 13 years ago, I’ve been warmly welcomed and embraced as a “native” of this remarkable community.

Recently, I learned about an extraordinary event—the MUNGA GRIT USA, a 175-mile bike race over pavement and gravel, beginning in Suttons Bay near Traverse City. As an avid cyclist, I immediately recognized the magnitude of this challenge. It made me reflect on the resilience we ask of our patients and their families every day.

So I asked myself:
“Will you commit to this race?”
“Can this be a commitment to your team, your patients, and your community?”

The answer is yes. My son and I have signed up to race on September 6th, and we’re dedicating our ride to raising funds for the Congenital Heart Center at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Our goal is to support lifelong care for individuals with congenital heart disease in West Michigan and beyond.

Here are a few things you may not know about our program:

·         Over 3,000 surgeries performed on children and adults with congenital heart disease since 2012

·         More than 2000 families spared long-distance travel for expert care

·         Surgical outcomes that exceed national benchmarks

·         Pioneering work in 3D imaging, holography, and printing

·         Cutting-edge AI research to enhance cardiac imaging

Every donation—no matter the size—will go directly to support our researchers as they push the boundaries of understanding and treatment for this complex group of diseases.

I’ll admit, I’m a bit nervous about the race. But those nerves pale in comparison to the courage shown by our patients and families. That thought will carry me through the toughest miles.
