Wausau Believe in Our Build

It is almost 5 years ago that my life and what I expected the path to be changed with the birth of my son, Braxton. He showed features of what specialists suspected was Down syndrome and when we left the hospital we were overwhelmed and questioning his and our future. Our hospital experience in itself started us out on a negative journey due to how the potential diagnosis was given. Since then we have spent countless nights away from home for many hospitalizations and medical appointments in Madison, WI and Rochester, MN.

It was during a trip to Madison for a doctors appointment that I was introduced to GiGi's Playhouse. My sister-in-law, Kris, met me there and within a few footsteps inside I knew I needed to do whatever was necessary to bring a Playhouse to North Central WI. From the colors on the wall to their specialized programming, GiGi's provided me hope of the possibilities of what our community could offer those with Down syndrome and their families locally.

Braxton tore through the place - touching and interacting with all of the activities that had been designed with him in mind. And it was pointed out after I left that for the first time my sister-in-law was able to see me "simply be". What does that even mean, "simply be?" For the first time since Braxton was born I was able to let my guard down, be comfortable, not have a heightened sense of what if, I was simply able to be in that moment.

There are many wonderful things GiGi's Playhouse has to offer including FREE programming uniquely designed for the needs of those with Down syndrome. A brick and mortar location for families to come and receive resources and to "simply be". But what sold me on bringing GiGi's to Wausau was the inclusivity. ANYONE is welcome to attend GiGi's programming.

My goal is to raise $5,000 to have Braxton sponsor the Family Room of GiGi's Playhouse.  This is so important because this room is what will allow parents to "simply be" and get those immediate resources that we did not receive. I want every parent to start off their journey feeling empowered and positive not overwhelmed and negative!

If Braxton had the words he would simply say thank you and start dancing! Oh, and to share with everyone and encourage to support a fun home away from home!

Family Room

During the Pre-Build Open House event we had family and Braxton's supporters stand in the area of where the Family Room will be in the Playhouse!
