Ragnar Zion Race in Honor of James Goebel supporting Band of Parents
Band of Parents

The Organizers

We’ve been inspired by James’ incredible attitude throughout his treatment. As his mother Emily put it, "If he can race around with one lung totally collapsed by a tumor and half a normal child’s hemoglobin what is anyone else’s excuse for not exercising?"

The four of us are old, we’re slow and aside from Isaac most of us haven’t run more than 8 miles at a time in years. But we figure if James can fight this hard and still have a great attitude then we should be able to complete the Ragnar Zion race this May 14th and 15th. Ragnar Zion is a 120 mile race held over 24 hours at Zion National Park and we’re going to be competing as a 4 person relay team in honor of James Goebel.

This means a lot to the four of us personally and we really hope that you’ll donate in support of @superherojamesg and neuroblastoma research.

About Neuroblastoma and Band of Parents

Neuroblastoma is an aggressive, pediatric cancer, mostly striking children less than 5 years of age and is diagnosed in approximately 700 children each year in the US. It's cause is unknown. Arising in the developing nerves of a child, it often appears as a tumor in the chest or abdomen. Neuroblastoma is difficult to treat, with patients suffering multiple relapses.

Due to the high cost of research and the small number of children diagnosed annually, pediatric cancer is severely underfunded by both the pharmaceutical industry and federal government.

Band of Parents is a grassroots, nonprofit organization and was formed to fund innovative research and clinical trials to help increase the survival rate of this deadly cancer. Band of Parents has funded more than $10 million dollars over the last 13 years to help save lives and continues its mission to fast-track a cure, using less toxic, targeted therapies.

Blake and Emily Goebel’s 4-year-old son, James Goebel, is bravely battling stage 4 neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a rare form of childhood cancer which requires very specialized treatment. As recently as 20 years ago this type of cancer was almost universally fatal. Thanks to treatment advancements, James has a fighting chance and fortunately he’s a heck of a fighter, but further research is desperately needed. Band of Parents is one of the few groups dedicated to fundraising specifically for neuroblastoma and has been really helpful for the Goebels.
