About Kokua for a Cause 24

You can make an impact on someone’s life and help give the gift of early detection to a woman in need.

Join Maui Health Foundation’s Kokua for a Cause in honor of breast cancer awareness month.

For over 15 years Maui Health Foundation has provided financial assistance covering the cost of mammograms and biopsies to uninsured and underinsured women on Maui.  Last year, thanks to the incredible support of our community, we were able to expand our services to the women on Lana’i. Our goal this year is to raise $100,000 to cover as many mammograms and biopsies as we can.

All funds raised through Kokua for a Cause stay on Maui, to benefit the women of Maui and Lana'i with all procedures done at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

    The Statistics

    Did you know...

    • Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in Hawaii

    • The incident rate for invasive breast cancer in Hawaii is higher than the U.S. average

    • ONE in every EIGHT women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. That is one in every eight of our mothers, daughters, sisters, or friends.

    • Studies show that early detection can help save lives by identifying cancers when they require less extensive treatment resulting in better outcomes.

    • Since 2005 Maui Health Foundation’s Kokua for a Cause program provides financial assistance to cover the cost of mammograms and biopsies for the uninsured and underinsured women on Maui.

    • The need on Maui is increasing.  The number of requests for assistance has grown from 70 women in 2018, to 83 in 2019, to 119 in 2020, and 163 procedures in 2021. Thanks to our KOKUA COMMUNITY, we have expanded our support to women on Lana'i, and hope to further expand our coverage of services in the near future.

    • All funds raised through Kokua for a Cause stay on Maui, to benefit the women of Maui and Lana'i and all procedures are done at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

    • Through our partnership with Maui Health, for every $200 we raise, we are able to cover one mammogram for a woman on Maui.

How Your Support Makes a Difference

“Days felt like years when trying to process the news of an abnormal mammogram, coupled with the stress of figuring out how to pay for a second follow-up. I am very grateful to the Foundation that they were able to help when I needed it the most. I felt so relieved.  If it wasn’t for the Foundation, I would have just not done the mammogram, because I couldn’t afford it.”

    – grateful patient

Maui Health Foundation receives an average of over 150 requests to fund mammograms, follow-up ultrasounds, and biopsies from uninsured and underinsured women on Maui.  These women are faced with the possibility of a life changing situation and do not have any other means to afford the screenings they need to detect breast cancer early on, which could potentially save them.

One in eight of our mothers, daughters, sisters, family, or friends will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
