Annie was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis as a toddler. However, like a true rock star, she never let her disease define her. Growing up, Annie defied all odds that were stacked against her. She ran track, was an all-star cheerleader, attended beauty school, and never missed an opportunity to be with friends. Not only did she accomplish amazing feats throughout her life, she also served as a role model and inspiration for myself and so many others.
Throughout her life, Annie survived two double lung transplants. In 2019, she was back on the transplant list for her third. As we anxiously waited for the call, Annie got sicker. She eventually became too sick to endure a third lung transplant. The doctors told us that she had 48 hours to live and, in true Annie fashion, she thrived for 7 more weeks. She got to see all of her friends and loved ones, and even made it back to her happy place, the beach in Breezy Point, NY. We watched many gorgeous summer sunsets over the Hudson River from her hospital window at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Night after night, we sang, danced, told stories, laughed, cried, and then sang some more. Annie passed away on July 25th, 2019. I will cherish the memories we made in those final weeks, forever.
Annie taught me how to live -- How to relish in every happy moment and turn every negative into a positive. No matter how sick and weak Annie may have felt, she was the first to crack a joke and make the whole room smile. I am blessed to have known and call Annie my friend. I miss Annie every day, but her memory will continue to inspire me forever.
