For my 40th birthday, I'm not hosting an extravagant celebration: I'm running the Chicago Marathon in honor of all patients living with kidney disease. This is a cause to which I have devoted my career, and I look forward to the day when kidney disease will be so rare that nephrologists like me are no longer needed!

Why am I running for kidney health? 850 million people around the world have kidney disease, a disease that diminishes the life span and quality of life for many. Unfortunately, there is not enough public awareness of kidney disease, which is often detected too late, and we are in dire need of developing effective therapeutics to fight it. A major part of the problem is that research in kidney science is woefully underfunded. The amount of U.S. research dollars we spend on each cancer patient averages around $450 per patient, whereas only $18 is spent on each kidney patient despite the epidemic of kidney disease. I hope that you will support this run, and everyone working to fight for kidney health. ✨ #LFG #HeartYourKidneys #KidneyDisease #KidneyHealth #Medicine #Science #Runforacause #Fabulous40 #Marathon
