"The Art of Mothering is Teaching the Art of Living..."
- Elaine Heffner

Celebrating Motherhood. Tributes and Reflections.

Twist Out Cancer programs give birth to complex and inspiring stories of motherhood. As resilient survivors, gentle caregivers, selfless supporters and expressive artists, we learn from the moms in our community. We invite you to pay tribute to a mom in your life, past or present. Share a picture, video, recipe card, memory or quote that honors her story and your experience.

Twist Out Cancer will mail a personal love note with each eligible donation to anyone you wish to honor.

"My mothers’ grace and appreciation of life paved the way for all of us, her family and friends, to share our feelings more intimately. "-Lisa Glick, BWC Chicago 2020

"Illness is something that feels completely out of our hands, but taking our story and giving it texture and color, helps us seize back the control over our story. It’s like flipping the script. We decide how we want the world to see our story versus the world deciding how to see our story. "

-Soraya Fata, BWC Inspiration 2021

About Twist Out Cancer!

Twist Out Cancer provides psychosocial support to individuals touched by Cancer through creative arts programming. What started in 2012 as a small grass roots online community movement has evolved into an international non-profit that has touched over 140,000 people around the world through our online platforms and community wide programming. With programs in Chicago, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, Tel Aviv, Philadelphia and Austin, we are a global community of support comprised of previvors, survivors, caregivers, supporters and artists.

"I knew I needed to address and heal old stuffed down emotional wounds alongside the chemo and surgeries and physical healing. I needed to feel it all. And, I learned that I could. " -Alicyn Yarbrough, Inspiration, BWC Austin 2020

What is Brushes With Cancer?

Brushes with Cancer strategically matches artists with those touched by cancer to create unique pieces of artwork reflective of their journey. Over a period of 5 months, pairs will connect virtually and their relationships are guided and supported by Twist Out Cancer mentors with the intention of creating a support system for both the artist and inspiration. The program finishes on a high note with our signature celebratory art exhibition, gala and auction where the artwork is revealed for the first time. Due to the nature of the pandemic all Brushes with Cancer programs will be held virtually with limited in-person art exhibitions.

"I am grateful for the Brushes with Cancer experience with my mom, and I hope that through the creation of this artwork she sees how brave and unwaveringly beautiful she forever is to me." -Ashley McAllister BWC. Inspiration 2020

How Can I Help?

Twist Out Cancer’s virtual programs continue to meet the needs of anyone touched by cancer, as well as all of us who are seeking connection while socially isolated, but the community still needs your support.

Please consider donating to our Brushes with Cancer programs or helping to sponsor one of our virtual events. Your contribution, at any level, means we are able to spread our mission further and continue to build meaningful connections with each other.

"{My Inspiration} Debbie and I are the same age, both with young children. Mothers keep kids feeling calm and safe when we ourselves do not. -Amanda Brodie Stenlund, Artist, BWC Chicago 2020

Where Does the Money Go?

Your contribution is an investment in an individual touched by cancer, giving voice to a story, healing to a family and expression through artwork.

Twist Out Cancer relies on generous charitable support from caring individuals like you to offer annual Brushes with Cancer programs, weekly Twistshops, and a vibrant community of support at no cost to participants. All programs are guided with licensed clinical supervision to address evolving psychosocial needs. We uniquely welcome survivors, caregivers and previvors, regardless of diagnosis and at any stage in the their journey.
