The primary aim of the WINNERS Lacrosse Summer "Hand Up" fundraising campaign is to raise $80,000 to bolster WINNERS summer programming, directly addressing the challenges faced by latchkey youth in Washington, D.C. During a time when crime statistics in DC are alarming, WINNERS Lacrosse aims to provide a beacon of hope by offering enriching activities and a supportive environment for youth who may not afford childcare. Our goal is to provide underserved children with safe and enriching opportunities that promote positive development and mitigate the risks associated with unsupervised summer hours. In the heart of Washington, D.C., where the cost of living can rival that of college tuition, families of Winners Lacrosse are trapped in a relentless cycle of sacrifice in the Urban areas where they reside. With 86% of WINNERS parents working in vital roles, the harsh reality is stark: the average three-bedroom apartment demands an eye-watering $4,765 monthly, leaving little for essentials, let alone childcare. As childcare costs soar to levels comparable to higher education, parents face agonizing decisions. Forced to leave their children unsupervised at home while they work, safety becomes a luxury they can't afford. In this landscape of financial strain and impossible choices, a hand up isn't just a gesture—it's a lifeline, offering hope and opportunity in the face of overwhelming adversity. As the summer sun approaches, so too do the challenges faced by latchkey youth in our nation's capital, especially those from the most income vulnerable neighborhoods. The cost of living in Washington, D.C. has reached staggering heights, with childcare expenses mirroring those of college tuition. For families of Winners Lacrosse, this reality is a harsh truth—86% of parents work tirelessly in essential roles, yet struggle to make ends meet amidst the sky-high costs.
