Physical activity can boost your immune system, help you feel good about yourself, increase your energy levels, alleviate stress, and help with sleep. With gyms closed, take a walk, run or hike outside.  Try any of the free online workouts.  A favorite for free yoga workouts on YouTube is “Yoga with Adriene”.  Utilize apps like “Map Your Run” to share your workouts with friends, set goals together, etc…  here is a list of some recommended work out and fitness apps https://www.self.com/story/best-new-workout-apps

Here's a great circuit that targets your swimming muscles when you can't get in a pool! 

Warm up for 2-5 minutes. I prefer jumping jacks, which require a similar shoulder movement as swimming. Then do:

20 Squat Jumps. Bonus points if you keep your arms extended over your head “streamline” style.

10 Lunge Jumps per side to get the heart rate up even more.

10 Dive Bomber pushups (aka Hindu pushups)

20 Regular Squats. Bonus points if you keep your arms extended over your head “streamline” style.

10 Lunge with twists per side, which work the same twisting core muscles you use while swimming. No weights required.

20 Front plank taps per side.

20 Side plank rotations per side.

20 Supermans

20 Flutterkicks per side.

Complete the entire routine 1-3 times through!

How will you go the distance for Hospicare in 2021?

Your first challenge is to establish your goal. Although we can't get to a pool or gym, or even meet a friend for lunch, we can still find creative ways to challenge ourselves while raising critical funding and support for Hospicare & Palliative Care Services! 

This year, we are inviting our entire community (all ages and genders welcome!) to join us in “Going the Distance” for Hospicare.  Each participant will decide what that means to them, and will work to achieve this goal while raising money for Hospicare.  We will support these creative endeavors from now through August 14, and then celebrate your success at our closing ceremony via zoom on August 17.  We have invited all past swimmers, boaters, volunteers and supporters to join us – there’s no limit on the number of people who can be involved in this virtual community event!

Here's a few ideas to get you started:

  • In place of your usual laps, think about ways in which you want to stay active and healthy. If you've always wanted to run, now is a great time to get started.  
  • Not a runner?  How about committing to a daily walk or bike ride?
  • Paddle around your favorite pond or lake.
  • Get your pup involved with a W-A-L-K on a new trail every week.

Want to keep your participation tied to swimming?

  • Put on your favorite Women Swimmin' t-shirt or hat and walk, run, or skip around the block. 
  • Wear your swim cap and meet your friends on Zoom for a Women Swimmin; dance party. (We highly recommend anything performed by our favorite band, the Yardvarks!) 
  • "Breaststroke" your way through the woods to your favorite waterfall. 
  • Find a stool and kick your feet and flap your arms. 
  • Play Marco Polo in the backyard with your kids. 

Examples of ways in which members of our community are “going the distance” are already creative and unique:

  • Some participants want to swim in the lake and are committing to spend a certain number of hours in the water. Others are committing to walking a certain number of steps a day, riding a bike, or doing a series of online dance classes.
  • One participant wants to support the local economy and is committing to visiting every ice cream shop in the county
  • Another is committing to one random act of kindness every day in the name of a close friend who died

Seventeen years ago, this event began as a conversation between Joan and her doctor, Ann Costello. Joan wanted a way to both challenge herself and celebrate a milestone birthday, and Dr. Costello enthusiastically joined her in this endeavor. In many ways, the 2021 version of Women Swimmin’ for Hospicare is taking us all back to that same moment. What do YOU want to do to challenge yourself and celebrate a community that will thrive long beyond COVID-19?
