A Statement Regarding the 2021 Women Swimmin’ for Hospicare

We know that our decision to offer a modified, socially-distanced lake swim for 2021 means that the event will look and feel very different– but we are thrilled to have gotten the clearance to be back in the water at all!

With the safety of our participants and volunteers the top priority, we want to assure you that we have established a process for evaluating the changes we are making to the event for 2021. With guidance from the CDC and state and local authorities constantly evolving, we are relying on several key groups of advisors and decision-makers to assist with all aspects of the modified event:

  • A 12-member planning committee that includes Hospicare board members, swimmers, boaters, and volunteers who collectively have over 200 years of experience with Women Swimmin’;
  • A Safety committee comprised of several long-serving volunteers, members of the Kayak Safety Team, a Board member and a swimmer;
  • The Hospicare COVID Committee, which meets weekly to review all plans for activities and events, including clinical and non-clinical endeavors;
  • Two designated employees at the Tompkins County department of health who have been assigned as our advisors; and
  • The Hospicare staff who are responsible for implementation of all decisions

We anticipate that guidance from the authorities will continue to change in the days ahead, and we may make small modifications to our plans as event day nears. We will update our website and FAQs to address any changes. To ensure that our participants know exactly what to expect on swim day, we anticipate making only minor adjustments.

As you might imagine, planning an event as large as Women Swimmin’ for Hospicare is a year-round endeavor, even in non-pandemic times! We commit to you that we will do the best we can to create an event that allows our swimmin’ women to be back in the water while prioritizing their safety AND enjoyment.

We know that some of the changes will be disappointing, especially to our beloved boaters and volunteers – and truly hope that we’ll be back in full force and traveling across the lake again in 2022!
