Women Swimmin' & Go-the-Distance is a community event that raises money for Hospicare & Palliative Care Services.

Hey, ya’ll! Remember when I swam across a lake as a fundraiser? I’m doing it again! Different lake, different org, but same wetness!

Okay, be prepared for a bit of a change in tone here…

Hospicare is one of those organizations that really touches everyone. My mom worked for Hospice for many years and would often talk about the impact it had on supporting families through their toughest times. Then, when she got sick, she came full circle and they supported her.

However rough that time in my life was, I can only imagine what it would have been without their support. Would I, barely an adult myself, have had to drop out of school to care for my mom? How would I ever have gotten my life together after that? And what kind of care would she have received, from someone who was simultaneously grieving her loss and trying to build a life to survive it?

I will always be grateful to Hospice in a way I can’t fully wrap my head around. Heck, I thought I was writing a cheerful little intro, and then all this heavy stuff came out…

Here are some things that Hospice does:

  • Provide vital medications to ease pain and manage symptoms
  • Provide specialized medical equipment so patients can stay in their own homes
  • Train more volunteers to deliver complementary therapies to enhance comfort and peace
  • Offer additional grief counseling sessions
  • Continue to provide intensive round-the-clock care at the Hospicare residence for patients who need more care than they can receive in their own homes.

So, yeah, if you can donate, you’ll be helping someone out there cope with losing their mom, or dad, or grandparent, sibling, child. And I’d really appreciate it too.

Feeling proud

I’m so proud of us for making the distance! Especially 12 year-old Ella!
