Right To Play Ambassador and National Lacrosse League (NLL) Assistant Coach and former player Andrew McBride is today's celebrity challenge host. Modern day lacrosse has a deeply rooted history in Canada, stemming back to the original caretakers of Turtle Island, prior to colonization. Many Indigenous Nations created versions of stick and net games that honoured the land, healed, made peace and celebrated fun. Despite inventing the game, in the 1880's Indigenous people were prohibited from participating in Lacrosse championships. Yet the game continued to hold an important role in the cultures of Nations. There has been a resurgence of visibility of Indigenous players in the last 40 years. The NLL and its 14 franchises have been drivers in celebrating its sport's authentic origins, from the talent on the field (over 10% of athletes are Indigenous), to its community relations initiatives.
