​History of Montana Polar Plunges®:

The Polar Plunge® is a Law Enforcement Torch Run® signature event. It is a unique opportunity for individuals, clubs, organizations and schools to support local Special Olympics Montana athletes by jumping, running or slowly crawling into the frigid and icy waters of Montana. The first Polar Plunge was held in Whitefish, Montana in 1999. Since then the events have grown to 13 different plunges held all over the state with over 5,000 participants raising more than $400,000 annually for Special Olympics Montana.

Montana's Polar Plunges® are part of a broader movement across the world in support of Special Olympics. These events are organized in partnership with the Law Enforcement Torch Run®, to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics athletes. Polar Plunges ® involve participants taking a dip in freezing waters during winter months, often in exchange for donations or pledges.

Over the years, Montana’s Polar Plunge® has contributed significantly to Special Olympics Montana, with hundreds of participants each year and substantial donations raised. The funds help support year-round sports training and competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The Montana Polar Plunge® has become more than just a fundraiser for many of its host cities; it's a community celebration. Participants often dress in costumes, teams are formed, and local businesses frequently sponsor the event. Schools, businesses, and civic groups get involved, adding to the festive atmosphere.
