I was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2020. I was working the day they called me to give me the results. I was told my diagnosis over a phone call. “Mrs. Altamirano, you have stage 2 breast cancer.” When I heard my diagnosis, I began to cry for a few hours, and then I had to continue to work. It was very devastating news. Shortly after, I was given 43 radiation treatments and removed 8 lymph nodes.
This has been a very painful process since it was during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, I was alone because my children lived in another city. My children were unable to accompany me when I had my surgery. I felt very lonely and without much support since I could not do much for myself after my surgery. Now, I am a strong woman who fights daily to improve.
