About Big Sister

Our mission is to ignite girls’ passion and power to succeed through positive mentoring relationships with women and enrichment programs that support girls’ healthy development. Ultimately, our vision is to create a mentor-rich community in which every girl has access to the individual nurturing, guidance, and support she needs to become a confident, competent and caring adult. We are a national model for gender-sensitive mentoring for girls which can be replicated in other mentoring programs.

Big Sister Boston is proud to be recognized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as the 2015 national Agency of the Year for our substantial growth in the number of children served, quality and length of mentoring relationships, and increased revenues that support our agency financially. We believe that all children can benefit from the care and guidance of an adult mentor and, that when girls’ unique needs are addressed, they thrive with increased confidence, improved relationships and the ability to achieve their individual goals. We are part of a network of more than 300 Big Brothers Big Sisters of America agencies. We are the only affiliate solely serving girls.

In 2019, we served more than 4,224 women and girls in 69 cities and towns throughout Greater Boston. For more information about our programs, visit our website.

How Your Support Makes a Difference

Big Sister raises more than 80% of our budget annually through private philanthropy. Your contribution is critical to our success.

The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified inequities in our community and put a spotlight on the social isolation of girls we support as Little Sisters. Since the start of social distancing, our staff and Big Sister mentors have been innovative in creating ways to ensure that our Little Sisters are emotionally connected to their Big Sisters. Our staff designed a Virtual Mentoring Toolkit so that our Little Sisters  receive the ongoing support and advice they have come to depend on from their Big Sisters. We have also created a virtual activity for the girls on our waitlist. And, we are in contact with families and are actively connecting them to other community resources to help alleviate food insecurity and other difficult issues they are facing.  In 2020, we made 178 new matches, which are 100% online, and now offer the mandatory 6-hour volunteer training to new Big Sisters as pre-recorded and live Zoom sessions. We created safety guidelines for Big and Little Sisters who were matched prior to going virtual, giving them the option to resume in-person visits if they, and the Little Sister’s caregivers, choose to do so.

Big Sister's door never closes. We are community connectors to strengthen the resiliency of the girls of Greater Boston

Big Sister Boston needs your help to reach our annual fundraising goal and keep Greater Boston's women and girls connected. We cancelled all in-person fundraising events in 2020 and will likely only have virtual or hybrid events in 2021. We are asking our loyal donors and volunteers to help close the gap by setting up a personal, peer-to-peer fundraising page.

The possibilities for social fundraising during a time of social distancing are endless! Ask for donations in honor of your birthday or other milestone, run a virtual 5K, host a trivia event, or set up a page to fund a Big and Little Sister relationship. There's no wrong way to fundraise and keep our mentoring relationships thriving while we continue to make and support new ones!

Simply reach out to your friends, family, colleagues, affinity group, gym buddies...and ask for support -- you'll be surprised how easy and fun it will be and how much your network wants to help.
