Launched for the first time in 2019, the Bridges of Hope Ride is an annual cycling event that raises funds for the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation, which improves the lives of children by helping families gain access to the care they need through medical grants. Taking place on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend (September 3, 2022), the Bridges of Hope Ride is also the “Chairman’s Ride” for the Maryland Cycling Classic (MCC) presented by UnitedHealthcare, a one-day international cycling race sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and USA Cycling. As a key part of the MCC weekend, the Bridges of Hope Ride provides cycling enthusiasts with a chance to ride some of the course to be used by the MCC pros, gain access to special MCC perks, and support a national charity. Set in picturesque Northern Baltimore County, the course takes riders on quiet roads over scenic bridges, streams, and waterways. This challenging ride offers routes of 50 and 100 kilometers, is supported and gently led by both pro and amateur cycling teams, and closes with a post-ride celebration featuring food, drinks, and live music.
Meet Salma:
Salma was diagnosed with spastic paraplegia at the age of three. Since then, Salma has been involved in extensive physical and occupational therapies to help her to improve her neurological functions and as well as to help her to adjust to life in a wheelchair.
UHCCF’s multiple medical grants have helped pay for the costly therapy copays, the wheelchair and injections to treat spasticity in her legs. Alongside of the financial impacts, the grant has also helped Salma’s confidence. She has developed great relationships with the therapy staff and her community, a hugely impactful and empowering feeling for this five-year-old.
