Tanya Topazio, a Mooresville, NC resident, won the title of Ms. North Carolina Cosmos USA in January of 2019 and will spend her year of reign promoting her platform: Heels for Hearts. Congenital Heart Defects are the number one birth defect in children, often requiring multiple surgeries and constant care and maintenance to help the children lead full-of-love lives. CHDs are near and dear to her as her brother, cousin, and two nephews were born with complex congenital heart defects. Heels for Hearts helps spread awareness of CHDs and partners with local organizations who assist these children and families.
In 2018, Tanya chose to support Make-A-Wish® by creating this fundraiser as a way to give back to an organization that has supported her family. Both of her nephews are wish kids from the Connecticut chapter! Locally, Make-A-Wish® Central and Western North Carolina is on track to grant more than 390 wishes to kids right here in our area, this year alone! The average wish costs the organization $6,000 to grant. Tanya is hoping to make one of those wishes come true through this fun and tasty event!
Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
Wishes aren't just a nice thing, they're a necessity. Research shows, and physicians agree, a wish can help improve a child's quality of life and produce better health outcomes. In fact, health professionals say the wish experience is an integral part of their medical treatment plan.
This is why at Make-A-Wish, it's our vision to grant every eligible child’s wish – to ensure more kids have joyful experiences... and some of the best days of their lives. Whether it’s a wish to have a puppy, see snow or be a police officer, each wish we grant at Make-A-Wish is as unique as each child. Yet, one thing remains consistent – the undeniable power wishes can have on a child’s emotional and physical health.
The central and western North Carolina chapter was founded in 1985 and has granted more than 4,730 wishes since its inception. The chapter covers 51 counties in North Carolina from Alamance county, westward. Every local child's wish is made possible by special individuals, corporations, volunteers, student organizations and foundations in our community. Thanks to local support, we'll grant more than 390 wishes in 2019 at an average cost of $6,000 per wish.
