Client Stories

Justice At Last has worked with many different survivors who have commented on the impact that our services have made on their lives. One such illustration that is being shared with permission is of a US citizen survivor of sex and labor trafficking who was first trafficked at the age of 16.

This survivor was trafficked for approximately 15 years by different traffickers, including a family member. She was referred to Justice At Last by a partnering service provider 6 years after being trafficking. At the time she was connected to us, she was struggling with lasting trauma and the stigma of being trafficked. We represented her over the course of many years on several legal matters, including:

    • Post-conviction vacatur relief to clear her record for crimes her traffickers forced her to commit;
    • Employment and discrimination rights for a subsequent job when the employer learned she had been trafficked;
    • Unlawful eviction and housing issues;
    • Estate planning for her children; and
    • Crime victim's rights when one trafficker was arrested.
After applying for recovery of lost wages that traffickers had stolen while she was trafficked, the California Victim Compensation Board awarded her $20,000 in lost income relief. She now has access to additional support services, increased faith in the legal system, and has additional financial means to help stabilize her housing and support her children.
