Welcome Great Alberta Road Trippers! We are so excited for you to partake in this exciting summer adventure to engage with the 17 communities that are home to Alberta's cancer centres. We are excited for you to explore the many views, restaurants, and trails in these various cities. Each community is unique, with its own vast array of things to do/see while respecting COVID-19 regulations. 

We are sure this will be a summer to remember! Make sure to post photos on your socials and tag @albertacancer with the hashtag #AHARoadTrip and #albertacancer to earn points for every community you visit! Barrhead

Located in Central Alberta, the town of Barrhead is filled with rolling hills, and lovely trees such as poplar, birch, pine and spruce trees. It is also home to the Barrhead Community Cancer Centre. Barrhead is located between the Athabasca and the Pembina River. It’s very popular during summer months for boating and fishing, as there are many lakes. There are also many beautiful grain elevators to see, you can visit Elevator Road for a visual time travel to the 1900’s.

Bonnyville

Bonnyville attracts those from across Alberta for many reasons, including its welcoming community and outdoor pastimes. It is also home to the Bonnyville Community Cancer Centre. There are many campgrounds and 14 lakes to fish in! Located on the Northshore of Jesse Lake, birdwatchers are known to frequent the area to watch the thousands of migrating birds. With exceptional scenery, there are so many beautiful walks, bikes, and hikes to enjoy in Bonnyville.

Bow Valley

Bow Valley is home to beautiful mountain towns inside and outside of Banff National Park. Canmore and Banff are beautiful towns close to this city that host some must-see spots!

Canmore

​Known for its beautiful mountain views, Canmore is home to the Bow Valley Cancer Centre. While you're in the town, schedule some time to visit Grassi Lakes - one of the most popular hikes this summer. Feeling hungry? Downtown Canmore has many local businesses open for service, however, please respect their guidelines when entering the premises to maintain physical distancing.

Banff

Located in Canada's first national park, Banff offers so much more than its beautiful mountain views. You can enjoy canoeing, scenic hiking trails, and even stop for a luxury stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Don't forget to visit the blue waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake while you are in the area!

    Calgary

    Calgary is the largest city in Alberta, and is located on the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Calgary has a wide-array of activities to do. Some notable activities include shopping and dining on Stephen Avenue, renting scooters to explore the river pathways, and nature walks in Bowmount Park or the Douglas Fir Trail. You can check out Telus Spark, the Calgary Zoo or even the Glenbow Museum. There is no shortage of things to do in Calgary for people of all ages. Calgary is also home to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

    Camrose

    Camrose is located 100km south of Edmonton. The city is a mixture of rural and urban environments. Some of these include sport facilities, the Camrose Golf Course, the Arts Centre, and parks and open spaces. Camrose topography is a combination of boreal forest and prairie. There are many small farming communities which border the town. Camrose is also home to the Camrose Community Cancer Centre.

      Drayton Valley

      Drayton Valley, located in central Alberta, is situated between the North Saskatchewan River and the Pembina River. When you visit Drayton Valley be sure to check out the Eagle Point Provincial Park and Blue Rapids Recreation Centre. You can paddle down the North Saskatchewan River or, discover 120 km of managed trails. There is horseback riding, target shooting and more to do in the park.       Drumheller

      Home of the Dinosaurs, visit the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology to see the largest dinosaur (model) in the world. If you’ve always wanted to visit the Grand Canyon, stay within the province and experience the same sights while hiking in the Badlands. Composed of sand and clay from the Horseshoe Canyon Formation, the Hoodoos Trail boasts solid strong capstones to protect the softer underlying base creating their unique mushroom-like shape. Drumheller is also home to the Drumheller Community Cancer Centre.

      Edmonton

      Edmonton’s heartbeat is the glorious river valley! At the center of the city, stretching through downtown, the Edmonton River Valley is where you can find mountain bike rentals, Segway tours, stand up paddle boarding, and over 150 km of trails! There are many local restaurants to grab a bite to eat after your adventures! Be sure to explore Edmonton's renowned arts & culture scene. A few spots to name are the University of Alberta Botanic Gardens, the Aga Khan Garden, the Edmonton Valley Zoo, and the most intricate jungle gym at the Snow Valley Aerial Park. Edmonton is also home to the Cross Cancer Institute.

      Looking for more hiking trails? 35 minutes east of Edmonton is the perfect place to day-hike, canoe, camp, and spot some wildlife. A wild oasis, Elk Island National Park invites you to explore its many trails and spread a blanket to have a picnic and gaze at a starry sky without any city lights.

      Fort McMurray

      Fort McMurray was established at a trading post for the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1870. Recent archaeological evidence indicate that this area has been occupied by First Nations people for as long as 9,000 years. Fort McMurray is situated where the Athabasca and Clearwater River meet, surrounded by boreal forest. There is so much to do from hiking, to boating, to catching the Northern lights! Northern fishing is like no other fishing. With very few people around, you can enjoy a peaceful fishing oasis, or just have some fun with family. Fort McMurray is also home to the Fort McMurray Cancer Centre.

      Grande Prairie

      The City of Grande Prairie celebrated its centennial year in 2014. Grande Prairie is located in Northwestern Alberta and is the largest city north of Edmonton. The city itself is filled with recreational opportunities in both summer and winter. There is also a state-of-the-art indoor recreational facility for year-round use. Enjoy a burgeoning arts and culture scene at Montrose Cultural Centre, and the Centre for Creative Arts.

      High River

      Traveling with kids? High River is a perfect stop on your list! Offering many kid-friendly activities, be sure to include this city on your Road Trip. Visit the Imagination Station at the Museum of Highwood – they’ll be sure to enjoy a dress-up house, a small ‘school house,’ a quiet camping area, a store, and more. The Whistle Stop Café is going to be a sure hit for the kids as they’ll be eating inside a train dining car! The High River Spray Park is a perfect activity to explore on a hot day. Afterwards, grab some milkshakes at The Hitchin’ Post (similar to Peter’s Drive-in!). The Arts & Culture scene is definitely worth exploring as well!

      Hinton

      Hinton is known for its Beaver Boardwalk for some amazing wildlife views, fishing, ATVing, golfing, horseback riding, mountain biking and so much more! As an added bonus, Hinton is an hour away from the mountains. While visiting Hinton, why not travel a little further south to visit Jasper National Park! Originally a trading post, the town of Jasper has changed a lot since its established date in 1907. Jasper National Park is the largest park in the Rocky Mountains and is located on Treaty 8 territory. A small town in the middle of Canada’s largest national park in the Rockies, it is an attractive town for those looking to get away from crowds! Add Jasper to your trip if you enjoy kayaking, and if you’ve always wanted to hike Maligne Canyon! There are also the Poboktan Waterfalls and Athabasca Falls – both super popular views.

      Lethbridge

      Home to the Jack Ady Cancer Centre, Lethbridge is one of the southern most cities in Alberta! There are a few hidden gems in Lethbridge, including the Indian Battle Park, the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, which was named in honour of the international friendship between Japan and Canada. The Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden is a lush oasis you can discover while strolling its exquisite grounds. You will come across trees, soothing water features, and a peaceful environment. Waterton Lake National Park features many hikes and waterfalls to discover and is only a 1 hour drive from Lethbridge.

      Lloydminster

      Lloydminster, Alberta uniquely shares a border with Saskatchewan. It is incorporated in both provinces but share a single municipal administration. Take a photo next to the borders markers located at the intersection of 44 Street and 50 Avenue, directly east of City Hall.

      Medicine Hat

      Medicine Hat is home to The Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre and the world’s largest teepee – the Saamis Teepee! Medicine Hat offers road trippers an escape to find something fun, relaxing, and different. From the 8 golf courses – a quick par 3 course at Paradise Valley and a challenge at Desert Blume – to the Dunmore Dugout with go karts, batting cages – to the arts district around Medalta, where tourists can wander about the huge kilns and old machinery imagining what life was like in the industrial era – there’s something to see and do for everyone! You can also go Geocaching in The Red Rock Coulee Natural Area, a provincial park 30 minutes south of Medicine Hat.

      Peace River

      Peace River is located in northwestern Alberta is defined by the beautiful river for which it is named. Flowing through two provinces (Alberta and British Columbia) and 1300 km of pristine wilderness. Peace River was a source of sustenance and transportation for the Beaver and Cree nations and the early Europeans, and still provides water for its communities. Recreational opportunities like fishing, jet boating, and canoeing are just a few fun activities you can do.

      Red Deer

      The midpoint between Edmonton and Calgary, Red Deer is home to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre. There is so much to explore in this beautiful city. Bower Ponds boasts many attractions year round including paddle boating, canoeing, kayaking, walking/running trails, and the Cronquist Historical House. Book a tour of the house and grab some tea and sandwiches to enjoy on their front lawn - picnic style! To cool off on a hot summer afternoon, you can go tubing in Discovery Canyon - bring your own tubes or rent on site for a fee!
