Riding to build a cycle of hope.
So much is different this year. One of the greatest annual joys of my life - participating in the week-long Habitat 500 ride - will be virtual this summer. I don't know yet how, when, or where I will log my miles. But I WILL log them.
Some things are NOT different this year. Everyone should be able to have decent, safe, affordable housing. By myself, I can do very little. Even all together, we can't do it all. But we CAN make a difference for some.
Over the last 15 Habitat 500 rides (plus one unofficial one), my friends raised $90,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Last year's total was an amazing $13,300. As I said, much is different this year, and I know not everyone will be able to give at last year's level, and some may not be able to give at all. I'm throwing a dart when I suggest a goal of $10,000 for this year's virtual ride, and I will be happy for EVERY donation that comes in - regardless of amount - and just as grateful for every person who tells me they can only support the ride "in spirit" this year.
I do not know whether I will be able to invite supporters to my house for the traditional Turtle Sundae thank-you party this year, but you can bet that finding a way to show my appreciation will be high on my list of things-to-do this summer.
Lastly, if you've ever thought about doing the Habitat 500 but couldn't find the time, weren't sure if you could do the miles, didn't want to sleep on gym floors, etc., THIS MIGHT BE YOUR YEAR! Try the virtual ride!
