Not only is child sexual abuse a problem, but it’s a pandemic. Child sexual abuse is a public health crisis that stretches far and wide—across every city, state, and nation. In the United States alone, conservative estimates report at least one in 10 children are being sexually abused. Learn more about the statistics here.
Child sexual abuse occurs anywhere and everywhere. It does not discriminate—it knows no gender, no religion, no wealth, no age, and no race. Children from all walks of life are at risk of being sexually abused. It happens in our schools, churches, camps, and even in our own homes. And the chilling fact is that roughly 90% of victims know their abusers.
Darkness to Light is a 501(c)(3) charity and leader in child sexual abuse prevention education for nearly 25 years. We empower adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse because we believe that protecting children is an adult’s responsibility.
Darkness to Light uses a unique social behavior change approach to pioneer award-winning training initiatives, including our evidence-informed flagship program Stewards of Children®, that equips and empowers adults to actively engage in child sexual abuse prevention and introduce it into their communities.
Child sexual abuse is one of the most prevalent public health issues facing society today. By conservative estimates, one in 10 children in the United States will be the victim of sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. In addition to the immediate trauma it poses on survivors, child sexual abuse has long-lasting health and social impacts that deeply affect the well-being of our entire society.
