Communities In Schools (CIS) of Nevada is part of the nation's leading evidence-based stay-in-school organization, serving 108 schools across the state.
We believe every child has potential – regardless of race, zip code or socioeconomic background – but may lack equal opportunity to succeed.
We place caring, well-trained, full-time employees in underserved schools to build trusting relationships with students and families, assess their needs and remove the barriers they face to learn, graduate and achieve in life.
We currently serve more than 100,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade with varying socio-economic backgrounds. Our case managed students achieved a high school graduation rate of 94 percent in 2022, a remarkable accomplishment given they are among our state’s most underserved students.
Meet Adrian Lawson, Class of 2023, from Legacy High School! Adrian is graduating as an honors student, received a scholarship from UNLV, and plans to own his own food truck or bakery one day! Hear how CIS Site Coordinators Tasha and DeShae worked with Adrian to identify his dreams and support him before he graduates next month! A special thank you to Chef Henderson for being a special mentor in Adrian's life as well. Please consider making a donation to assist our star students like Adrian.
What started as one school in Southern Nevada in 2004 has grown into 108 schools across four rural and urban school districts in the state of Nevada.
Where We Are. Communities In Schools of Nevada and our three regional locations currently serve more than 100,000 underserved youth in 108 rural and urban schools. The following is a breakdown of schools by each regional affiliate and includes the school districts within which they operate:
- 13 schools in Western Nevada (Washoe County School District)
- 15 schools in Northeastern Nevada (Elko and Humboldt County School Districts)
- 80 schools in Southern Nevada (Clark County School District)
Where We’re Going. Communities In Schools of Nevada aspires to operate in an even greater number of Title I schools across the state. Our aggressive growth strategy as outlined in the organization’s three-year strategic plan will move CIS from being in 1 in 5 Title I and high-needs schools across the state to 1 in 3 by the school year 2024-2025. This demonstrates our firm commitment to support every child we serve to stay in school, graduate high school and ultimately, help them to realize and live up to their full potential.
With our current reach of 1 in 4 Title I schools statewide, operating in four Nevada school districts serving more than 100,000 students in the 2023-2024 school year, and nearly two decades of service to the state, CIS of Nevada has a strong track record of delivering results with satisfied districts and schools. Over the next two years we will grow from 108 schools to 120+.
CIS is ready to meet the growing and urgent need of wraparound and social-emotional supports to improve attendance, behavior, academic performance, ultimately ensuring students are promoted to the next grade and graduate from high school. There is demand for our program by school principals and districts, but we are limited in our ability to scale due to funding constraints. At a time when child poverty has doubled and chronic absenteeism is at an all-time high, these basic needs, mental health supports, college- and career coaching, family engagement, and after-school programs are needed now more than ever.
Communities In Schools (CIS)
Students and families rely on schools for more than academic success. More than 11 million U.S. students live in poverty, and they depend on schools for access to meals, relationships and critical services such as healthcare, job training and many other vital supports.
At Communities In Schools, we surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
Founded in 2004, CIS of Nevada has been driven by the belief that every child has unlimited potential but may not have access to equal opportunities to succeed. Today, CIS of Nevada serves more than 100,000 Nevada students at 108 underserved schools, providing a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, called site coordinators. These site coordinators support school staff and provide a safe place to break down whatever barriers may exist in their lives.
With more than 120 community partners, we coordinate resources and services — literally bringing Community into our Schools — to do whatever it takes to support students. On a national scale, CIS is a network with more than 40 years of experience implementing evidence-based solutions for 1.8 million students in 3,270 schools.
