About Maine Elks Association

Maine Children’s Cancer Program (MCCP) is the pediatric oncology program of The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center. The program is Maine’s premier treatment center for children diagnosed with cancer and blood disorders. MCCP has three primary areas of focus:

  • Providing children with access to the best cancer treatments available
  • Participating in clinical research to improve survival rates and move closer to a cure; and
  • supporting the entire family throughout their journey with childhood cancer.

MCCP was introduced to the Maine Elks Association in 1985. It was then ratified that the program become a major project of the State Association. Since that time, the Association and its members have spent countless hours raising money in support of the program. To date, the Association has raised over $5 million dollars to support the vital work of the caregivers at MCCP.

Annually, the Maine Elks Lodges dedicate their time and resources to raise awareness and funds for Maine’s only pediatric oncology clinic and hospital.

Events that are heavily attended by Elks and community members include:

  • Golf tournaments
  • Motorcycle rides
  • 5K road races
  • Bake sales
  • Music festivals
  • Chili cookoffs
  • Camping weekends
  • Ice fishing tournaments

The motto of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks is “Elks Care–Elks Share, and the Maine Elks Association continues to exemplify this motto by donating millions of dollars to help the children of Maine fighting cancer and blood disorders.

Our Impact

The Maine Elks Association has been championing the mission of MCCP since the program's inception in the 1980s. Since then, Maine Elks lodges have raised over $5 million to support the work of MCCP through their unmatched efforts and dedication to helping local children and families.

Some recent projects that our fundraising dollars have supported include:

  • Funding to provide hydroxyurea to underprivileged sickle cell patients -- Hydroxyurea is a medication needed to treat patients with a blood disorder called sickle cell disease. Through this funding, MCCP has been able to provide hydroxyurea to uninsured sickle cell disease patients, and has seen a positive impact on this patient population, with a decrease in pain crises and sickle cell related hospitalizations.
  • Funding the position of a dedicated Child Life Specialist, who works to normalize the hospital environment, provide psychosocial support, and facilitate educational programs and fun activities for patients of all ages and their families in an effort to minimize the stress and anxiety related to hospitalization and medical procedures
  • Funding the position of a dedicated pediatric oncology clinical pharmacist, who ensures that treatment protocols are up to date and being followed in order to provide the safest, highest quality of patient-centered care to MCCP patients

Thank you for your support!
