About Give MICC

As COVID-19 has turned our world upside down, MICC has remained steadfast and resilient. We haven't missed a beat because of the support from our community.

In the spring semester, as our College Program students returned home, Instructors recreated all classes within a new online platform. Advisors and Specialists provided online check-ins with participants and families. The Admissions team started hosting virtual tours and open houses. The Careers Program began offering new continued education opportunities to Community Program participants. Annual events successfully moved to online platforms. Graduation was hosted in-person but with safety and social distancing measures in place. And after significant preparation and safety protocols, we welcomed the College Program student body back to campus this fall.

MICC participants have been just as steadfast and resilient. Participants quickly pivoted to distance learning; 85% of MICC families felt distance learning opportunities offered were good or excellent. Social activities made a transition to online options, which is continuing as we've seen some of our participants are engaging more virtually than offline. Early in the COVID-19 era, 40% of MICC participants remained employed as essential workers while others were furloughed or laid off. Our Job Developers supported participant’s decisions around re-entering the workforce and provided guidance about how to move forward safely. While unemployment is still high in the country, 88% of participants are again meaningfully employed.

As many organizations have experienced, these unprecedented times can be devastating. Even more so now, we believe that preparing for the unexpected is a necessity. We have conquered the challenges we've faced thus far, and, with your support, we can be prepared to continue transforming the lives of individuals and families affected by the autism spectrum and learning differences. #givemicc

Challenge Gifts

Inspired by MICC's impact on individuals and families affected by autism spectrum disorder and learning differences, The Lighty Family has issued two challenges in honor of their late mother, June Lighty, who passed recently at 97 years:

Dollar for dollar match up to $25,000
$2,500 released for every 25 donors giving $25 or more

June was a dedicated supporter of organizations serving young adults, including MICC. She witnessed her grandson, John’s (MICC Class of ‘08), growth and development as a participant in MICC’s programming. Moved by our unique educational opportunity, June even funded a lecture series in 2006, providing ten years of expert speakers to the MICC community.

For 25 years, MICC has transformed lives. As MICC celebrates our 25th year, the Lighty Family is proud to support our mission and set us up for success for the next 25 years.

About MICC

Minnesota Independence College & Community (MICC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit skills training program for young adults with learning differences and autism spectrum disorders. Our mission is to transform the lives of individuals and families affected by autism spectrum disorders and learning differences.

Since our founding in 1996, MICC has remained dedicated to helping our participants make successful transitions toward independent, sustainable living. We believe our participants can live independent, self-sufficient, whole lives. Having learned the skills to open doors previously closed to them, the future of our participants is limitless.

We are a lifelong partner to an individual who learns differently. We are MICC.
