Tom Eggers: Riding for Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Make A Difference with Your Miles!

This year, I registered with Team TEAL - Miles Your Way because I want to raise awareness and funding for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. My support will help improve the lives of individuals, families and communities touched by ovarian cancer. I need your help to keep me pedaling despite the hills, the bad weather and headwinds. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today in support of my fundraising efforts.

My motivation in participating in what has become a multi-stage bicycle tour is to honor the memory of a great lady, my wife Leslie, and support an organization dedicated to battling this disease which affected Leslie for so many years. My original intent was to ride solo from the Delaware coast to Crystal City, VA, then join the TransAm Express, hosted by the Adventure Cycling Association, a national nonprofit dedicated to bicycle travel. The entire trip was to take 2.5 months and terminate in Florence, OR, a distance of about 4,000 miles. Leslie completed fifteen long-distance bike tours between 2009 and 2017, including riding cross-country several times and down the Pacific Coast, but the TransAm is the one cross-country ride Leslie and I were not able to attempt.

Unfortunately, I had a bike crash on the C&O Canal trail in Maryland, forcing me to return home from Pittsburgh and give some very sore ribs a chance to heal. I'm now ready to rejoin the group in Missoula, MT and attempt to finish what I started back in April.

In this year of great challenges, one even greater challenge remains, saving more lives from ovarian cancer. Dollars raised for the NOCC support national programs and local market initiatives to heighten awareness of the subtle signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, assist newly-diagnosed patients throughout the country, provide ongoing support to caregivers, and advocate for the advancement of ovarian cancer research. Your help and support will help other families navigate this disease and hopefully not experience the loss my family has.
