FAQs:

Signing up:

What exactly is this event?

Think of it as a virtual walkathon: participants will walk, run, and/or bike and raise funds to support Food & Friends- but the difference is, you can do these activities at any time during the month of October, wherever you would like, instead of a one-day event at a specific location. Just track your activities on the event platform manually or by recording with Strava!

When we fundraise, do the donations need to match the miles or time we walk/run/bike?

No, people can donate whatever monetary amount through your page that they would like. We have different details about Food & Friends listed next to each donation level so they can see the impact their donation will have.

You can mention your movement goal and equate it to donations if you would like.

If I set my fundraising goal above $200, am I committing to raise that amount?

No, all participants commit to raising $200, but if you aim for $500 and do not reach it, we appreciate your efforts all the same as long as you hit $200!

What happens if I do not fundraise $200?

We will send you encouragement and fundraising tips in October and if you have not reached $200 by November 4th, we will send you a notice that your payment method from registration will be charged the difference.

What is the difference between an individual or a team?

You can participate as an individual without a team

or you can invite your friends to join you on a team through the invite link on your participant page

or you can join a team of a pre-existing participant when you register by selecting them in the dropdown menu

All team members also have their own individual page. Individual pages will track individual activity and fundraising points/status and the team page will combine all of the team members’ individual points and fundraising.

Should I ask my network to join my team or just donate?

Share with them the details about both! They can either join your team and participate in the month-long activity as well and raise at least $200 or they can make a one time donation to you.

Can I join the event after October 1st?

Yes, you can, but you will not be able to import and Strava activities retroactively. You can manually add activities you did earlier in the month.

Why does the event end on November 1st?

This final Saturday is a great day for one last fundraising and activity push! Plus, you can sign up for the 5K or 10K in Rock Creek Park.

Activity Tracking

Do I have to download Strava to participate?

No, but fitness apps are a great way to easily track activities and progress. You can manually enter the time you do for each activity directly on your OneCause Participant Page.

What if I track an activity on Strava that is not a run, a walk or a bike ride?

Only activities tagged as bike rides, runs, or walks will import into OneCause. If you go on a hike, tag it as a walk.

Does Strava track activity the way your phone will keep a step count?

No. Strava does not passively track - users must press “Start” and “End.” Strava functions like a stopwatch! Participants should start tracking when they begin walking, biking, or cycling and stop when they finish.

How do I track runs on treadmills/elliptical or bike rides on a stationary bike?

You can label a treadmill run as a “run” or a stationary bike ride as a “bike ride” on Strava, or you can manually input your time on these activities on your participant page.

Does Strava work with an Apple Watch or Fitbit or other smart watch?

Yes, if you download Strava on your phone, you can connect it to your smartwatch and record an activity directly on your smart watch through Strava (if your watch has these capabilities). You can also import activities into Strava from your Fitbit or phone’s health app.

Why are we tracking time and not distance?

Time is more equitable across different activities and different abilities, though it is not a perfect science.

What if I want to record other activities like swimming, kayaking, yoga or weight-lifting?

When you log an activity on your participant page on OneCause, you will be able to select “Other Movement: Zumba, Weight Lifting, Swimming, Yoga etc”

If I input an activity manually, how will you know I actually did it?

Movement is for yourself! We love the competition of activities and hope that those who log time are honest.
