Training Tips for a Successful Mutt Strut

Are you and your pup(s) gearing up for Mutt Strut? We're excited to help you get ready with some essential training tips! Whether you're planning to walk or run, these tips will ensure a safe and fun day for you and your pet:

  • Start Slow: If you or your pet aren't used to regular exercise, starting slow and gradually increasing the activity level is essential. Begin with short walks or jogs and gradually extend the duration and intensity.
  • Check with your Dog's VetWhile most dogs can be trained to run a 5k, it's always best to consult your vet beforehand. Some breeds and overweight dogs may not be suited for running.
  • Build Endurance: As the event approaches, focus on building your endurance by gradually increasing the distance of your walks or runs. This will help both you and your pet comfortably handle the full Mutt Strut route.
  • Practice Leash Etiquette: Make sure your pet is comfortable walking on a leash and knows basic obedience commands like "heel" and "stay." Practice walking together in different environments to help your pet remain calm and focused during the event.
  • Stay Hydrated: Keep yourself and your pet hydrated during training sessions and on the day of the Mutt Strut. Bring plenty of water and take regular breaks to rest and rehydrate.
  • Watch for Signs of Fatigue: Pay attention to your pet's behavior during training sessions. If they seem tired or reluctant to continue, take a break and give them time to rest. Pushing too hard can lead to injury or exhaustion. Some signs your pup may be getting fatigued: a long tongue; falling behind; heavy panting and drooling.
  • Have Fun: Most importantly, remember to have fun! Training for Mutt Strut is a great way to bond with your pet and enjoy quality time together. Celebrate your progress and enjoy the journey to the finish line.

With these training tips in mind, you and your furry friend will be well-prepared to tackle Mutt Strut with confidence. Remember to take it one step at a time and enjoy the experience together. We can't wait to see you at Coldstream Park on June 8th for a day of wagging tails and smiling faces!

Happy Strutting!
