About NICU Awareness Month 2024

September is NICU Awareness Month. Help Madelyn's Fund spread awareness for NICU families and raise funds to support those with a child in the NICU.
Madelyn's Fund supports NICU patients and their families, including those who suffer the trauma of infant loss. Babies in the NICU may have been born too small, too soon, or with a medical condition that requires intensive care. An average of 15% of all babies born in the United States require special care in a NICU.
A NICU stay is often an unforeseen circumstance that can put families in financial turmoil. Families are forced to take time off work, pay medical bills, and balance their jobs with spending time at the hospital and caring for other children. They also incur travel costs and other unexpected expenses. In the most tragic cases, they bear the expense of their child’s funeral.
Madelyn’s Fund aims to relieve some of these burdens, allowing families to focus on their infants. The fund supports NICU families with everyday living expenses and funeral costs, mitigating the devastating financial effects a NICU stay can have. Everyday living expenses include transportation (gas cards, Uber/Lyft), lodging to be near their child, household expenses such as utilities, meal cards, and baby supplies. In the event of infant loss, Madelyn's Fund helps families with funeral costs.
This experience brings many social-emotional, psychological, and financial challenges for families facing lengthy hospitalizations. Madelyn’s Fund is dedicated to supporting these families through their difficult journeys with care and compassion.

WHY PARTICIPATE?

Madelyn's Fund receives an average of over 100 requests each month from families needing assistance at Charlotte, North Carolina’s two main hospital NICUs. Because of the high level of specialty care for neonates available in Charlotte, it is evident that there will be an ongoing need for assistance. In February 2023, we also launched a partnership with Prisma Health Midlands to begin supporting a greater number of South Carolina families.
Madelyn's Fund meets the needs of NICU families in many ways. Assistance with unexpected expenses includes: transportation costs to and from the hospital, providing assistance with lodging, supplementing for loss of income by helping families maintain necessary household expenses such as utilities while they are unable to work, meals, supplies, and in the worst of cases, funeral costs. Madelyn’s Fund hopes to ease the stress families experience by providing financial assistance towards everyday living expenses and with funeral-related costs.
By donating, or helping to fundraise on behalf of Madelyn's Fund, you are giving families the opportunity to focus more of their energy and attention on their child's health and own wellbeing.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Madelyn's Fund assists families in many ways to ease the emotional and financial burdens they experience and allows them to be a part of their child's care while in the NICU. Having families present promotes bonding and increases positive outcomes for NICU infants.

Since launching in December of 2016, Madelyn's Fund has provided over $1,250,000 to 2,820 families, including funding 288 funerals. With your support, we can continue to provide much needed assistance to future NICU families when they need it the most.
