About NICU Awareness Month 2025

September is NICU Awareness Month. Help Madelyn's Fund spread awareness for NICU families and raise funds to support those with a child in the NICU.
Madelyn's Fund supports NICU patients and their families, including those who suffer the trauma of infant loss. Babies in the NICU may have been born too small, too soon, or with a medical condition that requires intensive care. An average of 15% of all babies born in the United States require special care in a NICU.
A NICU stay is often an unforeseen circumstance that can put families in financial turmoil. Families are forced to take time off work, pay medical bills, and balance their jobs with spending time at the hospital and caring for other children. They also incur travel costs and other unexpected expenses. In the most tragic cases, they bear the expense of their child’s funeral.
Madelyn’s Fund aims to relieve some of these burdens, allowing families to focus on their infants. The fund supports NICU families with everyday living expenses and funeral costs, mitigating the devastating financial effects a NICU stay can have. Everyday living expenses include transportation (gas cards, Uber/Lyft), lodging to be near their child, household expenses such as utilities, meal cards, and baby supplies. In the event of infant loss, Madelyn's Fund helps families with funeral costs.
This experience brings many social-emotional, psychological, and financial challenges for families facing lengthy hospitalizations. Madelyn’s Fund is dedicated to supporting these families through their difficult journeys with care and compassion.

WHY PARTICIPATE?

Madelyn’s Fund receives over 150 requests for assistance each month from families with infants in Charlotte’s two major NICUs. As a regional hub for advanced neonatal care, the need for support continues to grow. In 2023, we expanded our impact through a new partnership with Prisma Health Midlands to reach even more families across the Carolinas.
NICU stays often bring financial strain—families face lost income, travel costs, meals, lodging, utility bills, and, in the most tragic cases, funeral expenses. Madelyn’s Fund steps in to help alleviate these burdens so parents can focus on what matters most: their child’s health and healing.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Your donation directly helps NICU families stay present during the most critical moments, because when parents can be at their child’s bedside, outcomes improve.
Since 2016, Madelyn’s Fund has provided more than $1.64 million in support to over 3,500 families, including assistance with 361 funerals.

With your help, we can continue to be there for families when they need it most.
