Albertans Helping Albertans

Every day, 58 Albertans hear, “you have cancer”.

With the support of the community, Minister Prasad Panda will make sure these 58 Albertans know they are not alone. He will shave his moustache and raise funds for the Albertans Helping Albertans fund through the Alberta Cancer Foundation. The Alberta Cancer Foundation directly supports all 17 Alberta Health Services Cancer Centres in the province.

By fundraising on behalf of our Albertans Helping Albertans movement, funds raised will support the most emergent need.

What does this mean? From personal touches – such as providing blanket warmers, or helping patients transition back into their community after treatment – to groundbreaking research and leading-edge treatments, you will help provide expert care and support for patients and families across the province, no matter where they live or the type of cancer they are facing.

Clinical Trials The Alberta Cancer Foundation supports every single clinical trial that takes place in Alberta. Your donation supports the best and brightest minds to run these units, as well as front-line care teams to ensure trial participants are receiving excellent care. Within the next year, more than 40 clinical trials are expected to open in Alberta with 600 patients taking part.

About 80 per cent of cancer clinical trials supported by the Alberta Cancer Foundation are in immunotherapy. This treatment option, which uses the immune system to attack cancer cells, has become an exciting and promising therapy for many types of cancer.

The Linac-MR machine merges the superior imaging abilities of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system with the radiation treatment capabilities of a Linear Accelerator to improve the effectiveness of radiotherapy. This revolutionary advancement will allow doctors to see and treat cancer with radiation in real-time.

Cancer Prevention and Screening As an example, the Alberta Prostate Cancer Research Initiative (APCaRI) – a multi-disciplinary team of more than 100 prostate cancer professionals- are working hard to develop new and more accurate tests for detecting and treating prostate cancer from close to 9,000 data entries, which will help make valuable future treatment decisions and reduce unnecessary biopsies.
