Terri Runs Across Tennessee

The Great Virtual Road Race Across Tennessee... 1000 Kilometers for Huntington’s Society of Canada

My name is Terri Biloski and I’m going to run

The Great Virtual Road Race Across Tennessee to raise funds and awareness for Huntington’s disease (HD).  This race is 1000km and I intend to complete this during the month of May (Huntington’s Awareness Month). My goal is raise $1000... but if you help me double that (by raising $2000) I will run back too.

I have decided to set up this fundraising event as my late Grandmother and Mother had / have HD. I may also have HD as it is hereditary, and I have a 50% chance of developing it. As long as I’m able, I’d like to do what I can for my family and those affected worldwide. We need to find a cure!

My Grandmother, Bernice, was an energetic fun woman full of life prior to the onset of the symptoms of Huntington’s disease. HD began to show itself with a tremble of the hand or a forgotten name or place. Over the years her brain cells continued to die, the trembling got worse and her words began to slur. Eventually my Grandmother was confined to her chair or bed without the ability to take care of herself and without the ability to communicate with her family and friends. She was incapacitated to the point where she was no longer there but rather a shell of a magnificent woman. Her eyes blank, lacking emotion, and the smile we looked forward to for so many years no longer came across her lips when we entered the room. My grandmother was gone. I run for her!

My mother, who is also a cancer survivor, is now in the early stages of HD. If we do not find a cure or treatment she will follow the same road as my Grandmother. If something isn’t done I will again watch as the emotion leaves her eyes and her beautiful smile no longer crosses her lips. I run for her!

Currently, there are thousands of people across this country and many others that are fighting HD as it ravages their brains and slowly shuts down their bodies. There are also many more that have been touched by this disease as it affects a loved one or close friend. I run for them!

You could say that I’m a bit crazy about running, as I know my friends and family hold that thought. I ran over 10,000km last year and there were fewer than a dozen days that I did not run. I run to get to work; I run in the morning and evenings to coach and help people get into running; I run with my friends to keep in touch; I run local and international races to keep my competitive passion alive: Lastly, I also run from my fears that some day I too will develop this horrible debilitating disease and my children will watch as the love I have for them leaves my eyes and the smile fades from my lips.

Please join me in helping to find a cure and new treatments for Huntington’s disease.

HSC aspires to a world free from Huntington Disease (HD). Together, with your support, HSC maximizes the quality of life of people living with HD through services, support, advocacy, and research.

One in every 7,000 Canadians has HD, a devestating, degenerative brain disorder. The symptoms are like having Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ALS in one disease. Every child of a parent with HD has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease.

There is currently no cure.

Please show your support and help the HD Community find meaningful treatments!
