Read United supporting United Way for Southeastern Michigan
United Way for Southeastern Michigan

United Way and Schools

Read United was developed by the United Way for Southeastern Michigan to promote and enhance literacy initiatives throughout our region. As part of this effort, United Way Community Schools partners are participating in special programming aimed at encouraging students and their families to meet reading goals and participate in literacy activities, all while earning fun prizes donated by United Way and its partners.

A student's success depends so much on their access to print materials - that's why we are committed to putting more books in the hands of students across our region while encouraging our students and families to read together. Through these efforts, we hope to bring awareness to the systemic barriers that impede literacy.

Read United is a United Way for Southeastern Michigan initiative to bring awareness and support to literacy initiatives throughout the region.

Funds raised through Read United will be used to support the following initiatives:

  • Little Free Libraries – United Way is working to purchase and install Little Free Libraries around Southeastern Michigan, particularly in areas considered book deserts, to ensure children have access to books.
  • Book Fairs in partnership with Scholastic, United Way brings free book fairs to elementary schools. All students at participating schools get a total of 10 free books a year. United Way has put more than 30,000 books in the hands of students over the past year alone.
  • Systems Change – United Way funds collective impact organizations like Pontiac Reads and 313 Reads, which are working to change the systems that lead to literacy inequities.
