About School on Wheels

Since 2001, School on Wheels has been providing homeless children in Indianapolis with the educational tools and support necessary to achieve academic success.

There are over 5,000 children impacted by homelessness in Marion County each year. Families make up more than one third of the homeless population. Without intervention, research indicates that children impacted by homelessness frequently read below grade level, are twice as likely to repeat a grade, and are less likely to graduate. Students experiencing homelessness change schools an average of three times while homeless. Each time, it takes four to six months to catch up academically.

How Your Support Makes a Difference

School on Wheels works in partnership with schools, emergency shelters, transitional living facilities, and permanent supportive housing providers to provide on-site academic support to address the unique educational needs of students impacted by homelessness. Our tutoring and academic wraparound services strengthen the academic support system for children impacted by homelessness and empower parents to be educational advocates.

When you donate to School on Wheels, you’re investing in the local community. Your support helps us provide uniforms, school supplies, and backpacks to our students; recruit, train, and support volunteers; and run a diverse range of academic programs for families experiencing homelessness throughout Indianapolis.

Share the Love is our month long peer-to-peer fundraising and awareness campaign led by our volunteers. Together with our volunteers and supporters, we're raising $45,000 this February to ensure our programs reach more children impacted by homelessness. Join us so we can change lives through education together.
