Women Swimmin' for Hospicare is a community event that raises money for Hospicare & Palliative Care Services.

My Women Swimmin’ for Hospicare story has its roots in the summer of 1963.

My mom, Laura McCarthy Hedglon, seen here sending me off to the first day of first grade, faithfully drove me to swimming lessons that summer. She endured the mosquitoes as I went from the doggy paddle to something better. Those lessons serve me well, allowing me to swim with confidence in oceans and lakes such as Lake Atitlán in the Guatemalan Highlands.

In her honor, I will swim 1.2 miles across Cayuga Lake with hundreds of other women to raise money for Hospicare, which provides amazing medical and emotional support for terminally ill patients and their families, regardless of their economic circumstances.

If you can, please join me in supporting Hospicare by making a donation of any amount.

My mom and me in 1963

I learned to swim, thanks to my mom braving the mosquitoes at the edge of a swamp!
