EVERYDAY THE STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS AT HAWAIIAN HUMANE SOCIETY HELP OUR ISLAND ANIMALS. BELOW IS A STORY OF ELIJAH, ONE OF OUR MANY SUCCESS STORIES 🐾

At just one year young, Koa was found limping on Farrington Highway and was picked up by Hawaiian Humane in December of 2020. Our veterinary services team determined that his leg was fractured beyond repair and needed to be immediately amputated for his health, safety and to improve his quality of life.

At first, it was difficult for Koa to get used to his new three-legged life. Within a couple of days, he figured out the best way to walk, though he was still quite afraid of people. While spending time with our staff and volunteers, he did begin to warm up to familiar faces, but he needed a loving home and calm environment to adjust to his new “tri-pawd” and truly be able to live his best life.

Then in January of 2021, Kacey came to Hawaiian Humane to find a new pet. She saw little Koa and fell deeply in love. She didn’t mind that this young dog had only three legs and wanted to show him the love and care he needed and deserved. Kacey adopted Koa and decided to rename him Elijah. She was ready to help him overcome his anxiety and wanted to help him feel confident. Elijah was finally able to receive the 1-on-1 attention he needed with a new name, home and family.

Now Elijah’s a happy, healthy boy who enjoys treats, late-night cuddles and wrestling with his puppy friend, Raya. He’s now less apprehensive when meeting new people and is more willing to meet new dogs. He’s still learning to have fun on walks and how to be confident around larger groups of people. Although Kacey has a long way to go to help Elijah get over his anxiety, she’s dedicated to giving him all the TLC and loving patience he needs. The power of the human-animal bond can heal many wounds, and this pair’s relationship is no different. Elijah has become an integral part of the family, and despite his missing leg, he still has a big heart and lots of love to give, thanks to Kacey’s compassion and care.
