Be a Leader
A Leader is described as "the ability to lead other people." In of the world of Polar Plunges, a leader is described a person with a great sense of humor, who doesn't take no for an answer and believes totally in the powers of persuasion.
Your Biggest Challenge? Convincing People Not to Run Away From the Fun!
Let’s be honest—when you invite someone to sprint into chilly water in the dead of winter, their first instinct might be to run in the opposite direction. And hey, we get it. On paper, it sounds like madness. But here’s the truth: that’s their first mistake. Let them know this isn’t some freezing marathon or an arctic swim. Nope—this is a quick, exhilarating dash into the water, and then it's straight to the celebration. We’re talking good vibes, lots of high fives and a party you won’t forget.
They're Still Not Sold on the Whole "Cold Water" Thing?
No problem—we’ve got an option for the faint of heart (and cold of foot). If someone’s not up for even dipping a single tootsie in the water, they can proudly register as a Chicken! That means they’re officially excused from plunging, but still part of the team and the cause.
Now that you’ve caught their attention (and maybe even made them laugh), it’s time to rally the troops. Here are some tips to help you recruit your team and get everyone excited to raise funds for Special Olympics:
- Invite your significant other to join you.
- Invite family and friends to join you.
- Invite your family, friends and significant others to invite their family, friends and significant others.
- Let everyone know that the plunge is NOT a swim. For that matter, people don't even have to get wet if they don't want to. They can register as a chicken and be excused from plunging but still enjoy all the festivities.
- Invite colleagues to a happy hour and bring your laptop. While everyone is enjoying an adult beverage, get them to register right on the spot.
As people join your team:
- Thank them for joining.
- Advise other team members of the newest teammate.
- Keep your team motivated. Who is the current top fundraiser on your team? Who is catching up to your top fundraiser? What other team is nipping at your heels?
- If you have a personal involvement with Special Olympics, share a story.
- As you receive information from "Plunge Headquarters," pass it along to your teammates.
Have fun!
