IRA Charitable Giving

Starting at age 70 ½, you can make Qualified Charitable Distributions from your IRA account. Here are some things to consider:

  • · You can donate part or all of your annual Required Minimum Distribution to avoid paying income taxes on it. In addition, you’ll receive tax breaks for donating.
  • · A donation must be made directly from the IRA custodian to the Depaul USA Daybreak/Sheridan Center. It cannot be distributed to an individual, including yourself, and then donated.
  • · Donations must be received by the Depaul USA Daybreak/Sheridan Center before December 31st in order for the donation to apply to that year’s taxes. For example, we must receive a donation by Dec. 31st, 2025 in order for the donation to count towards your 2025 taxes.

Making a charitable donation through an IRA account can help lower a tax bill and support our mission of ending homelessness. There are many caveats to donating through IRA’s, so ask your financial advisor about the best way to go about it. Employer Matching Program

Many employers offer matching programs. In its most typical form, you can donate to the Depaul USA Daybreak/Sheridan Center and your employer will match that donation, thereby doubling the amount that the Depaul USA receives. Employer matching programs vary from company to company and are not available everywhere, so ask your employer about any matching programs available to you.
